Miyetti Allah bodies divided over call to defend themselves against ethnic attacks

- Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders’ Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) says it totally disagrees with its sister body Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore's comment on herder's retaliation

- MACBAN scribe Usman said the organisation is shocked at Kautal Hore's position and strongly condemns it

- Usman said MACBAN is only interested in Nigeria's peace and stability

The two foremost Fulani bodies in Nigeria, MACBAN and the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore have disagreed over whether herdsmen should defend themselves against ethnic attacks in southern Nigeria or not.

Premium Times reports that MACBAN on Saturday, July 20 condemned Kautal Hore’s statements which it saw as inflammatory.

MACBAN’s disapproval of Kautal Hore’s position was made known by its national secretary Baba Usman, who said his organization was shocked to hear that a leader of Kautal Hore said Fulani herders should retaliate to any attack or attempt to restrict them in southern Nigeria.

Usman said: “We read the comments of Kautal Hore in the newspapers today and we were shocked as most Nigerians.

“We totally condemn it because it was dangerous to the peace of the country.”

The MACBAN chieftain said his organization is only interested in peace in Nigeria.

“Even though we are a group mostly known as Fulani cattle breeders, we are only interested in actions and discussions that will improve Nigeria’s peace and stability. Nigerians should not see us as agents of destabilisation.”

Legit.ng had earlier reported that amid growing tensions generated by the RUGA altercation between the northern societies and other ethnic groups in the country, Kautal Hore called on the Fulani herdsmen to defend themselves against attack by ethnic militia groups.

The call came in barely 72 hours after President Muhammadu Buhari slammed the call by northern groups for all cattle rearers to leave the south part of Nigeria in the wake of bitter dialogue raised by the suspended RUGA settlement.

Saleh Alhassan, Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore's national secretary, made the call while similarly maintaining that herdsmen must enjoy the freedom of movement as entrenched by the Nigerian constitution.
