Breaking: Supreme Court upholds EFCC's seizure of Patience Jonathan’s $8.4m

A former First Lady, Patience Jonathan, has suffered defeat at the Supreme Court after the apex court upheld the order of temporary forfeiture made by a Federal High Court in Lagos in respect of the $8.4million traced to her by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC)

The Nation reports that the court on Friday, March 8, ruled that the appeal filed by Mrs Jonathan challenging the interim forfeiture, was without merit.

The five-man panel of the court ordered Mrs Jonathan to go before the Federal High Court to justify her ownership of the money to prevent its permanent forfeiture to the federal government.

The former first lady has been engaged in a legal battle with the EFCC which has confiscated some of her assets on the grounds that they are proceeds of corruption.

In another report, the acting chairman of the EFCC, Ibrahim Magu, has warned that any judge or lawyer in election petition tribunals found involved in money laundering will be prosecuted.

Magu, in a statement noted that some judges wrongly see election tribunals and appeal panels as an opportunity to enrich themselves, The Nation reports.

The EFCC boss said all lawyers and judges at the tribunals have a responsibility to dispense justice without inducement, fear or favour.
