Meet 15-year-old Divine Aniekwe who designs housing plans (photos, video)

Nigerian teenager Divine Aniekwe is one of the sound talents in the country that is to watch out for. The 15-year-old boy who designs housing plans is one that can be tagged as a local architect. Speaking with Legit.ng, the well-articulated guy discussed how he stumbled on his passion, the journey so far and his future plans.

Indeed, getting the perfect design for a dream house is one tough nut to crack. This is why people consult architects to help them bring to reality that structure which occupies their fantasy.

Aniekwe who hails from Awka in Anambra state is one Nigerian bestowed with the gift of designing beautiful houses. But he does not just draw these houses on paper. He brings them to life by creatively building them.

According to Divine, it was God who gave him this special talent of designing houses with such creative acumen and architectural prowess. Also, in his correspondence with one of Legit.ng's reporters, he said that God has been providing him with the tools needed to build his designs.

In the past, he was building with cartons and other paper materials. But while preparing to go for a state talent competition, a friend of his advised him to delve into the use of other materials to design his housing plans. Upon heeding this advice, his art become more pronounced and established.

Read his words below:

"I was 13 years old when we went for Anambra talent show. That is my first time of working this kind of project. I normally use cartons to make all these things but the first day we worked for that project, I met one of my school friends. He said to me that I can use another kind of materials. Instead of me using cartons, that I should go to the market and buy materials. That I have materials which I can use that it will be better... First of all, I started saving money. Then I went and bought it small small."

Divine who thanked God for giving him this talent revealed that he had done eight different projects with the equipment which he saved up for and bought at the bookshop.

He also revealed that he was self taught, and that, although he was not taught any technical subject in his school, he learnt to design and build houses on his own.

"This talent makes me to know that I am a child created by God and he knows the reason why he gave me this talent for me to work hard and go further.... In my school, we are not doing technical things. But on my own, nobody taught me all these things; but on my own, I am just doing it, changing styles... I normally draw plans of houses."

During the interview, the local architect divulged some of the housing plans that he had designed on his own. However, he has expressed sadness over the fact that nobody values what he does. Sometimes, he gets discouraged that nobody buys them and even when they goes to display them at super marts, they undervalue his products.

He told the story of how he had sold a particular building to a woman at the price of N2000 despite the fact that he built it for N5,400. Again, it takes more than five months for him to finish planning and building one of his houses.

In spite of all these, he has always had to pull most down because of the discouragement from people. However, he has been encouraged by some people who told him to learn more till he is able to pursue a standard career in his area of interest.

Talking about his future plans, Divine had this to say: "I am planning to become an architect. But people said I should put up for civil engineer and my parents, they said I should go and do civil engineer. But I said, no problem, I will just do the civil engineer because that is one of the things that I do here. Even architecture, even wiring, I am into all of them. Because all these things, I will build, I will wire the electricity, I will design, everything."

The smart guy also went on to talk about his inspiration, his poor family background, the tenacity of his parents in making sure his projects come to life and his own dream to work hard and accomplish what he was meant to achieve by means of his special talent.

"Sometimes, in my dream, a building will just show up to me... when I wake up, I will draw some of the ones that I carry offhead... sometimes I will go to quiet place... I will just try to put it down... when I finish drawing the plan, the money will just come...

"My parents, they are supporting me because we the family are not in a good condition but they are doing their best. They normally tell me, 'son, don't give up because this is a talent given to you by God.'

"I am just working because that the same God that knows the reason that he gave me this talent let him take me to my destination. So I am just working on my own because I know that the same God that gave me this talent will use one minute or an hour to change my situation."

Recently, a Nigerian youth from Kaduna took to drawing Kevin Hart. The American actor liked what he saw and rewarded the pencil artist for a job well done.
