Buhari assents to federal competition and consumer protection act 2019

President Muhammadu Buhari has assented to the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2019.

This was revealed by the presidential liaison officer to the National Assembly (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, in a statement sent to journalists on Wednesday, February 6.

The bill which was before now, passed in the National Assembly, but awaiting presidential assent, was sponsored by Senator Andy Uba (Anambra south, APC).

Legit.ng checks revealed that the bill was first read on the floor of the Senate on April 21, 2016 and since gone through the different stages of parliamentary process.

According to Enang, the Act establishes the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission and the Consumer Protection Tribunal to try violations.

The law, he said, is to promote economic efficiency, maintain competitive market in the Nigerian economy, protect the Nigerian economy, protect the interest and welfare of consumers by providing consumers with wide variety of quality products at competitive prices as well as prohibit restrictive or unfair business practices in the Nigerian economy.

Further functions of the commission include, Report annually on market practices and the implications for consumer choice and competition in the consumer market;

Eliminate anti-competitive agreements, misleading, unfair, deceptive or unconscionable marketing, trading and business practices;

Resolve disputes or complaints, issue directives and apply sanctions where necessary; among others.

This Act, he said, has accordingly, upon assent been remitted to the National Assembly/Appropriate Authorities as law of the Federation

Reacting to the President Buhari's assent to the bill, a customer service professional; Mrs Grace Adaji, hailed Senator Uba for his foresight in sponsoring the bill, adding that it will address various challenges facing the average Nigerian consumer.

Her words: “Posterity will be kind to Senator Uba for sponsoring such an important bill in the National Assembly that seeks to protect the rights of consumers. We are also grateful to President Buhari for assenting to the bill.

“The Act also does not end with just protecting consumers interest, it encourages trade, industry and professional associations to develop and enforce in their various fields quality standards, which at the end of the day, is also in the interest of consumers.”

Meanwhile, the permanent secretary, federal ministry of information and culture, Deaconess Grace Isu Gekpe, has called for renewed efforts to create awareness on the achievements of the federal government.

Deaconess Gekpe made the call on Wednesday, January 30, when she hosted a delegation from the Bureau of Public Service Reforms (BPSR), led by its acting director-general, Mr. D. I Arabi in her office in Abuja.

Speaking at the brief event, Deaconess Gekpe said Nigerians need to know about the achievements of the Buhari-led administration and the reforms carried out by the government.
