Spanish League champions Barcelona are reportedly planning to beat Arsenal to the signature of Sevilla star Steven Nzonzi this summer.

The 29-year-old was impressive for his French national team as they conquered the world in Russia to claim their second World Cup title in July.

His performances during the one-month long football showpiece made him a target for top European clubs who are planning to fortify their squad before the start of a new season.

However, Unai Emery will be hoping to take advantage of their relationship when he managed the player at the Spanish League side between 2013 and 2016 after which he joined his former team Paris Saint Germain.

Meanwhile Barcelona are yet to find a replacement for their legend Andres Iniesta who joined Japanese League side Vissel Kobe at the end of last term.

According to Spanish news outlet Don Balon, Lionel Messi has told club chiefs that he doesn’t want them to sign the 30-year-old, saying Nzonzi doesn't really fit into their style of play.

The French midfielder known for breaking up play but Messi would prefer a new midfielder that can control possession and contribute to attacks.

Don Balon report that Messi wants Barca’s next signing to be key and would prefer them to consider making a move for Ajax youngster Frenkie De Jong.

It’s unclear if Emery will make a move for Nzonzi before the window closes but Arsenal’s hopes of signing him will be boosted if Barca listen to Messi and decide to explore other options.
