Premium Times reports that the attack which occurred on Thursday night, July 26, was carried out by heavily armed gunmen who first attacked the military camp on the western flank of the town before advancing towards the town.

“We can’t say the level of damage or casualty for now because even as I talk to you now the shooting is still on."

A security official said such attack by the terrorists was expected after the group recently carted ammunition from the military.

“I can say that we expect this kind of attack to happen, following the recent attacks on military and carting away of arms cache and heavy equipment,” he said.

Sahara Reporters, citing sources, states that the attack which began at about 6pm caused pandemonium in the town as dwellers fled their homes.

A vigilante source said the insurgents stormed the town in utility vehicles and started shooting sporadically for hours.

“The villagers ran into bushes for dear life, as military engaged the insurgents in a gun duel,” the source said.
