Latest report from the camp of Nigeria’s main opposition party says the PDP has finally decided to change its name and has penciled down Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu as the man to lead the move to a new name.

Thisday newspaper reports that the party’s decision was due to the string of losses it has suffered in the last four governorship elections in Edo, Ondo, Anambra and Ekiti state.

The report says the move is also a proactive step designed to block the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) from always tagging it as corrupt.

The newspaper reports that the party plans to announce name change decision today, Sunday, July 22 and will also unveil Ekweremadu as head of the committee to come up with an appropriate new name for the party.

The party’s decision was said to have arisen from concerns by the party over chances of bringing aggrieved APC leaders back to its fold under the current name following Thursday, July 19 meeting between President Muhammadu Buhari and Senate President Bukola Saraki.

The party’s leaders feel that the corruption tag that the APC has given it would die a natural death with the name. This, they feel, would boost their chances of regaining old members and battling APC toe-to-toe ahead of 2019 elections.

Recall that Legit.ng reported earlier that ahead of 2019 general elections, PDP was said to be considering the possibility of changing its name.

It was said to be one of the conditions given by those who left the party before the 2015 general elections.

Name change is also believed to be one of the issues to be discussed by the party as it has called an emergency meeting of the National Executive Committee meeting on Thursday, April 19.
