Updated: Imo lawmakers begin impeachment process against deputy governor Madumere

The Imo state House of Assembly, on Tuesday, July 10, began the impeachment of the deputy governor of the state, Eze Madumere, as political tension continues between him and Rochas Okorocha.

The Punch reports that the deputy governor of the state, Ugonna Ozuruigbo, moved the motion for the impeachment of Madumere.

Ozuruigbo accused the deputy governor of abandoning his duties and office as the state’s number two citizen for a long time.

The report adds that the plenary was tension soaked with security men barricading all the major points around the assembly complex.

Madumere was accused of gross misconduct. understands that the House of Assembly later set up a six-member committee to probe allegations as contained in the motion of the deputy speaker.

Premium Times reports that the petition for Madumere’s impeachment was signed by 13 out of the 27 members of the House.

The deputy governor was accused of disobedience to the governor, Rochas Okorocha, by refusing to carry out official duties assigned him by the governor.

The petition said Madumere had refused to attend state executive council meetings and hold meetings with the governor and commissioners.

They claim that he was once imprisoned for theft in the United States. earlier quoted reports showing that Prince Eze Madumere could be impeached.

According to the reports, the purported impeachment is being instigated by the kitchen cabinet of Governor Rochas Okorocha, led by his wife Nneoma Nkechi Okorocha and his son in-law, Uche Nwosu, who is also the governor's chief of staff.

The governor's allies are wary of the deputy governor as he is seen as the main opposition to Okorocha’s plan to install Nwosu as his successor.
