A former chairman of Agege local government area, Jubreel Abdulkareem, has allegedly been detained by operatives of the State Criminal Investigation Department of the Nigeria Police Force, over the deadly fracas at the All Progressives Congress (APC) election in Lagos, on Saturday, May 12, Premium Times reports.

A member of the APC identified as Nurudeen Olanose, was shot during the violence which erupted at the party’s Agege local government congress.

Legit.ng notes that the victim died on the spot, after allegedly being shot at the back of the head.

APC leaders in the local government subsequently traded blames among themselves, over who caused the fracas.

In the aftermath of the violence, 12 people, including Ahmed Haruna; Bosun Adigun, a former driver at the Agege local government; Salami Azeez; Sabitu Kamorudeen; and Toheeb Ahmed, were arrested.

Others are Bimbo Kuku, a former ward leader in the local government; Badmus Fatai; Kabiru Kareem; Olayinka Olasende; Adetutu Omotosho; Idiatu Olokode; and Ogunbona Semiu.

Abdulkareem was reportedly invited to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, after policemen stormed his home on Kosoko Street, Agege, on Monday, May 14. He was subsequently detained.

A party source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, stated: “Their defence is that the 12 people arrested are delegates. But Mr Egunjobi (the current Agege council chairman) is insisting they are not delegates. He’s taking the list of delegates to Panti this morning.”

Another source reportedly stated that both Abdulkareem and Egunjobi were invited by the police; but could not confirm if the latter was detained.

After the fracas, party leaders had heaped blame on Abdulkareem and ‘thugs’, at a press conference. However, Abdulkareem claimed he was being victimised for refusing to step down for Mudashiru Obasa, the speaker of the Lagos state House of Assembly, ahead of the 2019 election.

Abdulkareem and Obasa are both from Agege Constituency 1 in Lagos state.
