Vehicles vandalised as Shi'ite youths allegedly clash with pollice

- Shi'ite youths allegedly protested the continuous detention of their leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky on May 14

- The protest reportedly became violent after the police tried to disperse the protesters

- Several vehicles were destroyed and a police officer was injured as the the youths resulted to throwing stones

A protest by youths of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) also known as Shi'ite became violent on Monday, May 14, after a clash with men of the Nigeria Police Force at the Federal Secretariat complex, Abuja.

The youths, protesting the continuous detention of the Shi'ite leader, Sheikh Ibrahim El-Zakzaky, vandalised vehicles and harassed motorists as workers, commuters and visitors scampered for safety, Punch reports.

The youths throwing stones at authorities trying to disperse them chased away a police team and vandalised the windscreen.

A source claimed that the Divisional Crime officer, Federal Secretariat Police station, Linus Ogar, was also stoned and he sustained injuries on his face. Ogar was reportedly rushed to his office at the secretariat complex from where he was taken to an unidentified hospital.

An eyewitness, Bola Saliu, who claimed he saw the youths attacked Ogar, said: “He was seriously wounded by the protesters who pelted him with stones. He had to be evacuated to a hospital as his condition was a bit critical."

The police eventually sent a reinforcement who dispersed the protesters and arrested some of them.

A driver, Joshua, whose SUV was vandalised, said the police fired tear gas canisters at the protesters who, in turn, responded with stones which hit the rear windscreen of the Acura SUV, smashing it.

Joshua said: “I would have driven the SUV away when the youths started engaging the policemen but the battery was flat and I could not kick-start it. So I had to abandon it and flee. By the time I came back, the back windscreen had been shattered and there were stones and tear gas canisters in the boot and on the back seat. You can see them for yourself."

Legit.ng earlier reported that the federal secretariat complex in Abuja was grounded by Shiite youths protesting the continued detention of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria leader, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Meanwhile, twenty-two members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), better known as Shi’ite, who were arrested and detained for taking part in a violent clash with the Nigeria police in Abuja recently, were granted bail by a magistrate court.

A magistrate court in Abuja granted them bail on Thursday, April 19, after they were accused of criminal conspiracy, unlawful assembly, rioting, causing grievous hurt, amongst other charges by the police.
