Lagos land use charge: Resident laments, explain various taxes paid by landlords

- Residents of Lagos are still furious with the Lagos state government over its controversial 2018 land use charge

- One of them, Otunba Olufemi Fadairo, took to Facebook to question the state government about the various taxes that property owners are mandated to pay

- The land use charge was reviewed by the state government, and property owners in the state are to pay more than what they used to

Since the distribution of the 2018 land use charge demand notice for property owners across the state by the Lagos state government, residents of the state have condemned the government for being inconsiderate to the plight of the people.

While some took to social media to register their grievances over the reviewed land use charge, others organised protest to condemn it.

Legit.ng noted that a Facebook user, Otunba Olufemi Fadairo, posted on his page various taxes that come with owning a house in Lagos state. In the Facebook post, Fadairo outlined various fees landlord incur in Lagos in form of government taxes.

He wrote: "You buy a land in lagos with your money for your use - Expense. You then pay omo onile before you can start building - informal tax. You pay 350k for land survey of one plot - Lagos state tax. You pay between 1 million and 3 million to perfect document, which means you have leased the land for 99 years - Lagos state tax.

Meanwhile, you are still paying PAYEE to Lagos state every month from your salary - Lagos state/FG tax. You make the gutters and roads on your street by yourself. - Lagos state tax. You get OPC to protect your area by yourselves - Lagos state tax. You generate electricity by yourself - Lagos state/FG tax.

Then you decide to install your own borehole by yourself and lagos state brings another tax -Lagos state tax. You then dispose your trash by paying mallams so that cholera does not kill you - Lagos state tax. Lagos state still comes to LAWMA fees from you every month even though they don't dispose your trash - Lagos state tax.

To go to work everyday and come back, they put a toll on your way that you have to pay - Lagos state tax. After paying all these taxes on your house and other sundry things, Lagos state now brings a 4 million naira land use charge again. Kilode? Was it Lagosians that betrayed Jesus ni? Se na like this e go dey go?"

In reaction, some other residents said what Ambode is doing is not fair.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Ikeja branch on Tuesday, March 13, commenced the much talked about protest against the reviewed land use charge law in Lagos state.

The NBA chairman, Adesina Ogunlana, led members of the branch and others in the protest despite speculations that the protest may not hold.

The attempts by the Lagos state police commissioner to stop the protest failed. However, the police later agreed to provide security cover for the lawyers.
