American woman says she fell asleep with a headache and woke up with a British accent

An American woman claims she woke up with a British accent after going to sleep with an extreme headache.

Legit.ng got to know that Michelle Myers, from Arizona in the US, has had frequent headaches in the past.

Afterwards, she almost always developed foreign accents, such as Irish and Australian, which nevertheless disappeared within weeks.

However, the 45-year-old woman said a British accent has stuck with her for about two years now.

In an interview with ABC, Michelle said she was diagnosed with Foreign Accent Syndrome, which sometimes occurs strokes or brain injuries.

She explained that the condition is not easy to live with:

People would think it was a joke, saying things like, 'You sound like a Spice Girl.' It was hard, because I was really struggling. I have come to terms with the fact I might sound like this forever. I realise it's part of me now.

Michelle added that she just hopes to be understood:

Some people think it's physiological; others think it's psychological. People like me — we don't care which one it is. We just really want to be taken seriously and if it is something that's going to hurt me, help me.
