A member of the House of Representatives has called for the renaming of the Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA) in Kastina state.
At the plenary on Thursday, November 10, Danlami Kurfi, the lawmaker representing Kurfi/Dutsin-Ma federal constituency highlighted the need for the institution to be renamed to Muhammad Dikko Federal University, Dutsinma.
The lawmaker in a motion raised at the floor of the House said it is public knowledge that the pioneer Emir of Katsina, Muhammad Dikko, was a teacher who devoted his life to providing and protecting education in the northern region.
Kurfi said renaming the institution would mean immortalizing Emir Dikko for his contribution to Kastina state and the northern region as a whole.
He said such action will, "practically demonstrate the acknowledgement and appreciation of the educational contributions of the late Emir of Katsina."
He also informed the House that immortalizing the Emir will encourage the people of Kastina state and Nigerians in general to make meaningful contributions to their states and the nation so as to also be remembered and appreciated in the future.
The House after hearing Kurfi's motion urged the House committee on tertiary education and services to ensure implementation and report back in six weeks for further legislative action on the university which was established in 2010.
Legit.ng earlier reported that the Northwest University which was established by the Kano state government in 2012 was renamed Maitama Sule University.
The decision by the state to rename the university followed the death of the Nigerian politician, acclaimed orator and diplomat.
The Kano state government said renaming the university is its plan to immortalize the late politician and indigene of Kano.
