Senate passes whistle-blower protection bill

The Nigerian Senate has passed the whistle-blowers protection bill meant to protect persons making disclosures for public interest and others from reprisals.
Legit.ng reports that the bill was passed by the upper chamber during plenary on Wednesday, July 19, after it was read for the third time.

The whistle-blowers bill was among other anti-corruption bills passed during plenary.
Others are the witness protection bill and the mutual assistance in criminal matters bill.

Senate president, Bukola Saraki shortly after the whistle-blowers protection bill was passed said the lawmakers will remain committed in the fight against corruption.

He said: “This is a promise kept. Today, we have passed a landmark piece of legislation to fight corruption and protect patriotic Nigerians who are fighting corruption.
"This Bill will protect the lives of those who risk themselves to expose corrupt practices in Nigeria."
Meanwhile, the Nigerian Senate said it would pass a new law that will separate Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit, NFIU, from the Economic and Financial commission, EFCC, and make it independent.
The Senate made this known on Wednesday based their decision on the reported suspension of the NFIU from the Egmont Group.
Legit.ng reports that the NFIU is an arm of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC that helps tackle money laundering and monitor financial flows.
NFIU's membership of the Egmont Group allows members share intelligence relating to international finance and illicit flow.
