The community is well known for a curious ancient death ritual that is unheard of anywhere else on earth. In this place, when people die, they are not buried or cremated.

The dead members of the village are placed in a bamboo cage alongside a row of ten other corpses. And they are left there to rot in one peace.

Once all the flesh has melted away under the scorching Indonesian heat, the skull is removed from the rest of the skeleton and placed on a stone altar underneath a sacred tree, where it becomes another building block of the shrine.

Trunyan is reportedly the only region in Bali where this ceremony takes place, and only those who are married are entitled to the extremely bizarre honour when they kick the bucket.

The Cemetery, where the bamboo cages sit, is close to the village but only accessible by boat across Lake Batur. Only men are allowed to go there and deliver the diseased.

The villagers believe that if women step foot in the cemetery, then the village will be struck by an earthquake or volcanic eruption.

After the ritual, which involves cleaning the corpse with fresh rain water and wrapping it in cloth, the corpse is left in the cage with its head uncovered.

The bamboo cages are reportedly arranged under a tree known as Taru Menyan. It is a special species of tree that is said to emit pleasant scent that neutralises the deadly smell of rotting human flesh.

Once all the cages are full, the corpse that has been there longest is removed to create room for the next and placed on a pile.

The residents of Trunyan also believe that they are the original Balinese, way before the Majapahit migration from Java began in 1340.
