Another proposed move in the summer collapsed after AC decided not to sign him due to an issue detected with his history of ACL injuries during the medical examination.

He appeared destined to stay at Leverkusen before Bremen swooped on the deadline day to sign him on loan, covering a part of his €6 million salary.

He made his debut against Borussia Monchengladbach and provided an assist during the 4-0 victory despite playing 19 minutes off the bench.

However, in his second match, his coach singled him out for criticism for a problem that was with the whole team during their 3-0 loss to SC Freiburg, as noted by Soccernet.

Bremen had a difficult game at the Westerstadion. Their visitors went into halftime ahead by a goal through Vincenzo Grifo’s penalty.

Junior Adamu doubled the lead in the second half, before Karim Coulibaly’s own goal. Romano Schmid missed a penalty in the second half for the hosts.

“For me, he was too ‘all over the place’, it’s okay for him to remain stationary in the centre. It wasn’t how I wanted it to be,” Steffen said as quoted by Get Football Germany.
“It wasn’t just him, but a lot of the guys who weren’t staying in their positions. We have to stick to our positions so we can overload them again and again. That’s something I’ll be addressing.”

Bremen sit 14th on the German Bundesliga table with four points from the opening four matches, one point above Augsburg in the relegation zone.
