Manchester United fans are calling for Grimsby Town to be expelled from the Carabao Cup after they admitted to fielding an ineligible player in their surprise win over the Red Devils.
Clarke Oduor, who joined Grimsby on loan from Bradford City a day before the second-round tie, was the player in question.

He was registered at 12.01 pm, just one minute after the 12 pm deadline, rendering him ineligible to play against the Red Devils under competition rules.
Despite the technical breach, Oduor came on in the 73rd minute with Grimsby leading 2-0, and he would later miss a penalty in the dramatic shootout, which ended 12-11 in their favour and saw Manchester United eliminated.
The result prompted calls for Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim to be sacked, with potential targets already lined up to replace the Portuguese manager.
Grimsby reported the error themselves and were fined £20,000, half of which is suspended until the end of the 2025/26 season, Daily Mail reports.
The sanction, however, has angered many Man United fans who believe the outcome of the tie should be overturned.
Man United fans demand action
The reaction online has been swift and furious as several Manchester United fans have flooded social media, insisting Grimsby’s victory should be reversed.

One fan tweeted:
“They should be disqualified, right?”
Another posted:
“Pack it up lads, Grimsby’s fairytale ends here, United qualify by default.”
A third added:
“Manchester United finally got a revenge.”
Another wrote:
“Can’t they just give man utd the win.”
Despite the anger, Manchester United have decided not to escalate the matter further, accepting the EFL’s ruling, The Mirror reports.
The decision mirrors a similar case in 2019, when Liverpool avoided being thrown out of the competition despite fielding Pedro Chirivella in a League Cup match against MK Dons.
In that case, Liverpool were fined £200,000 but kept their place in the competition.
Grimsby responds to controversy
In a statement released on Tuesday, Grimsby Town explained the registration error and revealed it was not done intentionally.
“The registration of Oduor was submitted to the EFL at one minute past the deadline and the issue was not immediately identified by the Club due to a computer problem being experienced at Grimsby,” the statement read.
“We accept the fine imposed and fully recognise the importance of adhering to competition rules and regulations. This mistake was not deliberate, and the Club acted transparently by self-reporting the breach as soon as it came to light.”
For now, Grimsby will remain in the Carabao Cup, while Manchester United must accept their elimination.
