National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) side Bay FC have paid tribute to Super Falcons star Asisat Oshoala following her role in Nigeria’s successful campaign at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

Oshoala, who netted one goal in five appearances during the tournament, was instrumental as one of the senior players who led the Super Falcons to a record-extending 10th WAFCON win in Morocco.

Oshoala’s goal in Nigeria’s opening match against Tunisia set the tone for the team’s dominant run, culminating in their historic victory.

According to Daily Post, the 30-year-old forward was honoured in front of fans at PayPal Park ahead of Bay FC’s clash against San Diego Wave.

Recognition from Nigeria’s President

Following Nigeria’s continental success, President Bola Tinubu rewarded the Super Falcons and their technical crew with national honours.

Each player was conferred with the Officer of the Order of Niger (OON) title, alongside a financial reward of $100,000 and a three-bedroom flat.

For Oshoala, this recognition adds to an already glittering career with the national team.

Having now won the WAFCON title four times, the six-time Africa Women’s Player of the Year winner remains one of the most decorated footballers in the continent.

Oshoala’s consistency and leadership continue to inspire younger players in the squad, while her achievements at club and national level strengthen her status as a true legend of women’s football.

Oshoala dismisses retirement rumours

In the aftermath of WAFCON, speculation spread rapidly online that Oshoala was considering retirement from international football.

The rumours were fueled by her reduced role in Morocco, where she was not always a regular starter, losing her place to star forward Esther Okoronkwo and captain Rashidat Ajibade.

However, the six-time African Player of the Year has now addressed the issue, categorically dismissing the claims as false and baseless, per Premium Times.

Oshoala reaffirmed her commitment to the Super Falcons, making it clear that she has not called time on her international career.

Now 30 years old, Oshoala, who has scored 37 goals in 61 appearances for Nigeria, emphasised her determination to continue representing the country at the highest level.

Her dismissal of the rumours is a welcome boost for the Super Falcons, as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures and the road to the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Oshoala reacts after receiving $100k reward

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that Oshoala has led the Super Falcons stars in reacting to the gifts and national honour conferred on the team by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Bay FC striker, after receiving the recent award, shared a video on her social media pages, during which she joked she would block anyone calling her MON.
