Akwa Ibom was created by the then former military president, Ibrahim Babangida, out of Cross River on September 23, 1987.

In a statement on his social media page, the governor called for peace and unity among the people of the state. He said he has paid honour to the past leaders and vowed to continue to work with stakeholders in moving the state forward.

Reactions as Akwa Ibom celebrates its creation

However, the governor's message has started generating reactions from some residents. Below are some of their reactions:

Chris Udoh tells the governor his expectations:

"In a time like this, I would have expected a leader to address us...tell us how far we have gone and lay out our plans for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 10 - 20 or 50 years. Reduce it into writing. Write out the vision and make it plain for everyone to see and follow. When people see what the government is doing and anticipate the next moves, they will not have time to think about ethnicity or tribalism. 'Value the citizens in the state and know them by name."
