Tension as Bandits Attack Students' Hostel in Polytechnic

  • Armed bandits invaded a male hostel of students of Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic, Hadejia, in Jigawa state

Hadejia, Jigawa state - There was pandemonium at the students’ quarters of Bilyaminu Usman Polytechnic, Hadejia, in Jigawa state, when armed bandits attacked students.

As reported by The Punch, the gunmen injured several students and snatched numerous mobile phones.

The attackers, however, did not succeed in kidnapping some students due to the victims’ cries for help.

An eyewitness who spoke on condition of anonymity said:

“It was around midnight when the attackers came. They caused chaos, injured some students, and took away many phones belonging to the students.”

Another eyewitness, Tukur Danlami, narrated how students got to know about the attack.

“If not for the loud shouts and screams of the students, we wouldn’t have known what happened. Neighbours from nearby communities rushed to help, forcing the attackers to flee.”

Another student, Yunusa Yaro, also explained how the hostel was attacked by the armed bandits.

“They entered our dormitory with weapons, attacked us, and stole several phones without warning. Thankfully, we escaped unharmed.”

The State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the bandits attacked an off-campus male hostel not far from the institution.

“The location is quite isolated, which made it vulnerable to the assault by the unknown armed men.”

He disclosed that security had been reinforced around the polytechnic and its environs to prevent a recurrence.

Adam further revealed that investigations were ongoing to arrest the culprits.

“From our records, two students were seriously injured during the attack. They were promptly taken to the Hadejia General Hospital for medical treatment.”

He added that the injured students have been discharged by the medical doctor.

Bandits kidnap 20 medical students in Benue

Recall that bandits kidnapped no fewer than 20 medical students along the Otukpo (Benue) - Enugu road in Benue state.

The medical students were abducted while travelling to the Federation of Catholic Medical and Dental Students (FCMDS) Annual Convention in Enugu state.

The state police public relations officer, Sewuese Anene, said an investigation into the matter has already commenced.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that nearly 1,000 Nigerian students have been victims of abductions by bandits between December 2020 to June 2021

The development is threatening the state of education in the country, as some affected parents have vowed not to allow their children to go back to school.

Nevertheless, the federal government has said it is working on ensuring the safety of students and urged state governments to also do the same.
