The Federal High Court in Abuja on Friday directed the Nigeria Medical Association (NMA) to set up a team of medical experts to ascertain the health condition of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

Delivering the ruling, Justice James Omotosho mandated that the medical report be submitted to the court within eight days.
The findings will guide the court on Kanu’s application to be transferred to the National Hospital, Abuja, for specialised medical care, Vanguard reported.

Medical team to assess DSS facility
Justice Omotosho instructed the NMA committee to visit the medical facility of the Department of State Services (DSS) to determine if it is equipped to meet Kanu’s health needs.
“The committee is at liberty to make use of any hospital in the country to carry out its investigations,” he added.
Committee composition detailed
The court specified that the NMA panel should comprise between eight and ten members, including a cardiologist and a neurologist.
In addition, the Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital must also serve on the committee to ensure proper evaluation.
The report from the medical team will assist the court in ruling on Kanu’s request to access more advanced medical attention amid the seven-count terrorism charges he faces, Daily Trust reported.
DSS rejects taking Kanu to National Hospital
In another report, Legit.ng the Department of State Services (DSS) has urged the Federal High Court in Abuja to reject the application filed by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu. Kanu asked the court to transfer him from DSS custody to the National Hospital for the sake of urgent, life-threatening heart condition.

According to BBC Pidgin, Nasir said Kanu enjoys "maximum comfort including any food he demands".
He added that the DSS has one of the best medical facilities in the country. "The State Service has one of the best medical facilities in the country and we employ the most qualified medical personnel to take care of people that are in custody, including Nnamdi Kanu."
Protecting witnesses in Kanu's trial
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the high court acceded to the request by the prosecution for its witnesses be shielded in the terrorism trial of Kanu.
Justice James Omotosho granted the permission while ruling in an ex-parte application filed by the prosecuting lawyer, Adegboyega Solomon (SAN). While arguing the application, Awomolo said the identities of the witnesses needed to be protected for security reasons.
