A family tragedy in Adamawa State has taken a dramatic turn after the death of a young mother during childbirth triggered accusations of witchcraft against her grandfather.

Mrs Tarisom Kindness died on 27 August 2025 while giving birth in Zuran, a village in Demsa Local Government Area. Her baby was stillborn and she died shortly after from heavy bleeding at the General Hospital in Numan, according to her uncle, Afraimu Ndatam.

During her burial the following day, mourners were stunned when a young man, reportedly overtaken by what witnesses described as the deceased woman’s “spirit,” stood up and accused Mrs Kindness’s grandfather, identified as Mr Osom, of causing her death.

Mr Ndatam told Legit.ng that the dramatic accusation prompted the family to question the elderly man.

“He admitted someone gave him a piece of cloth over two years ago but said he never wore it and never intended harm,” Ndatam said.

Alleged “evil cloth” at the centre of dispute

The family claims the cloth, gifted by a man from the nearby village of Farai, is linked to supernatural forces. When confronted at a community meeting, the man, identified as Mr Kabari Farai, acknowledged giving the cloth but denied any evil intent.

According to Ndatam, the community leader in Farai later received a letter from a local shrine summoning Mr Osom and others to appear over alleged defamation.

“The letter was shocking and to us it proved there was something unusual about the cloth,” Ndatam said, adding that the family has refused to honour the shrine’s invitation.

The community leader of Farai has escalated the matter to the traditional ruler for further investigation, saying the shrine summons amounted to a false accusation against the entire village. He warned that penalties could follow if the allegations are found to be baseless.
