Tinubu Directs Shettima to Lead Nigeria's Delegation to 80th UN General Assembly in New York

- Shettima will deliver Nigeria’s national statement on 24 September and announce new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) at a UN climate summit

FCT, Abuja - President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed Vice President Kashim Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, United States of America.
The session, which runs from Monday, 22 September to Sunday, 28 September 2025, will also mark the 80th anniversary of the UN.

Shettima to deliver Nigeria’s national statement
According to a statement issued via X on Saturday by Stanley Nkwocha, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Communications (Office of the Vice President), Shettima will represent President Tinubu at several high-level events.

The Vice President is scheduled to deliver Nigeria’s national statement on Wednesday, 24 September, between 3:00pm and 9:00pm New York time.
Climate summit to feature Nigeria’s commitments
Shettima will also participate in the UN Secretary-General’s special event on climate for Heads of State and Government, taking place on the same day from 2:00pm to 6:00pm.
“At the event, Nigeria is expected to announce its new Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) under the Paris Agreement,” Nkwocha disclosed.
Housing roundtable and bilateral meetings
The Vice President is further billed to attend a high-level roundtable of the Global Champions on Adequate and Affordable Housing, hosted by the President of Kenya on 24 September.

He will also engage in other bilateral meetings and side events during the General Assembly.
Following his engagements in New York, Shettima is scheduled to proceed to Frankfurt, Germany, for discussions with officials of Deutsche Bank before returning to Nigeria.
VP Shettima chairs NEC meeting
Vice President Kashim Shettima on Thursday, August 28, presided over the meeting of the National Economic Council (NEC) held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The session brought together governors and other key officials, with discussions centered on pressing economic issues affecting the nation.
Among those in attendance were the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Kwara State Governor, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, and the Chairman of the Progressive Governors’ Forum, Imo state Governor Hope Uzodimma.
Shettima speaks on Tinubu's subsidy removal
Previously, Legit.ng reported that Vice President (VP) Senator Kashim Shettima has said the "courageous and unavoidable reforms" being undertaken by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, are currently fixing Nigeria’s "structural weaknesses".
Shettima said, despite the hardship, the reforms are a proof of the power of political will in economic policy.
Legit.ng reports that since taking office in May 2023, Tinubu has removed long-standing fuel subsidies, unified multiple exchange rates, restructured the tax system, and addressed central bank financing of budget deficits, policies aimed at fiscal discipline and economic liberalisation.
