Tragedy in Kano as Thunderstorm Claims Two Lives, Injures Another

A severe thunderstorm that accompanied a heavy downpour in Kauyen Kogin Fulani, Gezawa Local Government Area, has tragically killed two individuals from the same family on Monday.

The victims have been identified as Basiru Muhammad and Salamatu.

Family in mourning as thunder strikes two

The devastating event was confirmed by the father of Basiru, Malam Muhammad, who spoke to a local media in the grieving community.

He described his son’s death as both sudden and shocking.

“We were disturbed seeing the corpse of our son. Even yesterday, before the incident that cost his life, Basiru took part in farm work at home. In fact, in the evening, while I was performing ablution, I just saw him fall, and in no time he is dead.”
“But before his death, all his clothes were burned. Basiru is my son, and we have accepted his death as a fate by God, and we pray for him mercy and forgiveness,” the bereaved father stated.

The tragedy comes days after an early warning issued by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET), which had alerted residents of Kano State to the possibility of thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.

The agency had strongly urged residents to avoid staying outdoors during rainstorms to prevent such disasters.

Earlier in a similar occurence, Legit.ng reported that a thunderstorm in Adamawa State has left one person dead, several others injured and dozens of families homeless, following heavy rainfall and widespread flooding in Demsa Local Government Area.

The Mbula community, one of the worst affected, was struck by tragedy when a powerful thunderbolt claimed the life of a resident, Leader Jimre, while injuring others who are currently receiving treatment at a local hospital.

Residents describe the incident as unprecedented in the history of the area. The combination of floods and storm damage has wiped out farmlands, destroyed homes and left families struggling to find food and shelter.

‘The sound of the thunder is unexplainable’

Speaking to Legit.ng, a family member of the deceased recounted the moment of the tragedy:

“We were sitting outside when it started raining heavily, and we decided to rush back home before we got too wet. On our way back, the thunder struck and my brother immediately fell to the ground. The sound of the thunder is unexplainable, it got me so frightened. We quickly rushed him to the hospital and then he was confirmed dead by the doctor.”
