Sokoto State Introduces Monthly Allowances for Imams and Jumu’at Mosques

Qur’anic memorisation and mosque support prioritised
The announcement was made on Saturday by Governor Ahmed Aliyu during the graduation ceremony of 111 Qur’an memorisers from the Sokoto branch of the Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi Foundation. The governor stated that the measures were designed to enhance the effectiveness of clerics in their religious duties and to ensure the continued flourishing of Islamic teachings in Sokoto State.
“We have also introduced monthly cash allocations to all our Jumu’at Mosques, ranging from N300,000 to N500,000 depending on their category. In addition, monthly allowances have been introduced for Imams, their deputies, and Mu’azzins across the state to support them in the discharge of their duties,” Aliyu said.
The governor emphasised that Islamic affairs were a key component of his administration’s “Nine-point Smart Agenda,” ranking second only to security. He added that promoting Qur’anic memorisation among children would help cultivate a generation committed to Islamic values and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).
Government pledges infrastructure support
Governor Aliyu also directed the school management to identify land for the establishment of a permanent site for the foundation, assuring that the state government would provide the necessary support for its development.
The event drew notable figures from across the region. Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, commended Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi for founding the institution and praised local scholars for fostering Islamic ideals and peaceful coexistence.
Former Sokoto governor, Aliyu Wamakko, represented by Aminu Sufi, encouraged parents to support their children in pursuing Qur’anic memorisation. Senator Abdulaziz Yari, represented by Lawal Liman, pledged ongoing support for the foundation and announced a donation of ₦22 million along with food items for the graduands and the school.
Foundation expansion and social impact
Sheikh Dahiru Usman Bauchi, represented by Ibrahim Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi, explained that the foundation’s expansion to other states was intended to provide structured Qur’anic education and reduce street begging among children.
Each of the 111 graduands received ₦20,000 and clothing materials from the Sokoto State Government. The ceremony concluded with Qur’anic recitations and prize presentations, marking a celebratory moment for Islamic education in the region.

People killed in boat mishap in Sokoto
Legit.ng earlier reported that at least 30 traders, including women, are feared dead following a tragic boat accident that occurred in Kojiyo village, Goronyo local government area (LGA) of Sokoto state.
As reported by Daily Trust, the victims were reportedly on their way to the weekly Goronyo market when their boat, carrying both passengers and goods, capsized around 1.30pm on Sunday, August 17.
Taking action on the matter, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Sokoto Operations Office (SOO), said it deployed its response team to support ongoing rescue operations following a tragic boat mishap.
