Kano Crash: Tears as 12 People Die in Road Accident

  • 12 people have died and five others injured in a lone road crash that happened in the early hours of Friday, August 15, at Samawa village in Garun area of Kano state

Kano, Kano state - 12 passengers were confirmed dead in a fatal accident that occurred at Samawa village in Garin Mallam local government area (LGA) along Zaria- Kano Expressway.

The Punch noted the sad update in a report.

Kano road accident

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Kano state command disclosed that the lone crash which occurred in the early hours of Friday, August 15, 2025, also caused injuried to five individuals.

According to a statement signed by Abdullahi Labaran, the FRSC image-maker in Kano state, the accident occurred at about 2:40 am. Labaran added that it involved a DAF Trailer CF95 model with registration number KMC 931 ZE, which was carrying a mixed-load of goods (Ajinomoto spices) and passengers.

The Sun quoted Labaran as saying:

“Preliminary investigations revealed that the crash was caused by a mechanical fault when the trailer’s cab hook broke, causing the Trailer cab to detach from the trailer body, resulting in loss of control."

Legit.ng reports that the latest accident on the Zaria-Kano Expressway came just one month after a similar one happened.

In July, the FRSC confirmed the death of 21 people following a fatal head-on collision involving a heavy-duty truck and a commercial passenger bus along the road.

In a statement, the corps said the accident occurred at Kasuwar Dogo, Dakatsale, and blamed the crash on a “route violation” by the bus driver.

Threat of road accidents in Nigeria

Road accidents are a significant problem in Nigeria, causing numerous deaths, injuries, and significant financial losses. Mechanical problem with vehicles, particularly with commercial vehicles, is a major factor.

In early 2025, the FRSC revealed that 5,421 people were killed in road traffic crashes across Nigeria in 2024.

This is a seven per cent increase from the 5,081 fatalities recorded in 2023.

The FRSC said the rise in fatalities occurred despite a 10 per cent reduction in the total number of road crashes nationwide, with 9,570 incidents recorded in 2024 compared to 10,617 in the previous year.

Newlyweds die in Katsina accident

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that a devastating road accident claimed the lives of a newly married couple and three others in the Abattoir community of Katsina metropolis.

The tragic incident occurred along the Kurfi-Katsina road, cutting short the lives of five people.

The deceased, 37-year-old Abdulsalami Yusuf Kankara and his wife, Malama Zainab, were returning from Kurfi LGA, where they had gone to console another couple who suffered a mlscarriage.
