It's a Scam: NCC Speaks on “Davido Airtime and Data Giveaway" Advert

FCT, Abuja - The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) on Tuesday, November 23 alerted Nigerians about a false Davido’s airtime and data giveaway advert going viral on social media.

In a statement released by the spokesman of the NCC, Ikechukwu Adinde, said a group of scammers are on the prowl to swindle unsuspecting members of the public by capitalising on the generosity of David Adedeji Adeleke, the Nigerian singer popularly known as Davido.

Legit.ng recalls that the Nigerian music star, songwriter and producer recently announced he would donate N250 million naira to various orphanage homes across Nigeria after getting N200 million from fans.

The NCC said the scammers rolled out an advertorial titled “Davido Airtime and Data Giveaway”, which went viral, claiming that Davido is “giving out free 5K Airtime and 10GB Internet data of All Networks” to celebrate his birthday.

"In the advertorial, the general public is urged to hurry and get the gift by clicking on the links that supposedly redirect them to network sites, where they will be credited with airtime and data. This is a scam," the statement read partly.

Don't fall for the scam - NCC urges Nigerians

The NCC has advised telecom consumers in the country not to have anything to do with the advert or any similar bogus enticements.

It stated that the adverts designed to get people’s MSISDN and other information that fraudsters can use later to defraud unsuspecting telecom consumers and members of the public.

"MSISDN is simply the full phone number of a cellphone, in addition to other protocol information. This number is unique and identifies subscribers/owners in a GSM or other mobile networks. Therefore, it suffices to state that any unscrupulous person or unethical hacker can use the number and attendant protocol to undermine the privacy of the real owners of the number through identity theft and other scams," the NCC explained.

The communication agency reiterated its warning to telecom consumers to be cautious and not to let their guards down.

The statement added:

"If a promo or an offer seems too good to be true, then it is likely untrue."

Meanwhile, Obafemi Hamzat, the deputy governor of Lagos, on Saturday, November 20, prayed for Davido over his decision to disburse N250 million across orphanages in Nigeria.

On his official Facebook page, Hamzat stated that Davido and his generation will never lack because that is the portion of givers.

He cited scriptures from the Bible and Quran in his heart-felt prayer for the young singer.
