Mixed fortunes for Nigerian households
According to the report, there was a modest relief per month as the average price dropped by 1.91%, from N21,010.56 in June to N20,609.48 in July.
However, experts warn that the slight decline may not show a sustained downward trend.
The national statistic body disclosed that in July 2024, Nigeria experienced a 9.37% monthly drop in cooking gas prices, with prices declining from N15,736.27 in June 2024 to N14,261.57 in July 2024, showing a reversal of fortunes relative to the current prices.
States and zones with the highest, lowest prices
NBS reported that the prices of a 5kg cylinder decreased by 0.96% monthly from N8,323.95, recorded in June this year, to N8,243.79 in July 2025.
Every year, the price increased by 37% from N5,974.55 in July 2024.

According to the NBS, the findings were based on data from over 10,000 respondents across Nigeria’s 774 local government areas.

Cooking prices drop: Dealers give reasons
However, a market survey by Legit.ng showed that cooking prices dropped drastically in August, with one kilogramme selling at N900 from N1,050.
Dealers disclosed that import waivers on cooking gas accessories and stable exchange rates were responsible for the sharp drop in price.
“60% of the LPG consumed in the country is imported,” Jonathan Ohie, a gas dealer at the Iju-Ishaga area of Lagos, said.
A stable exchange rate means a stable price. Right now, the dollar rate is relatively stable compared to what we experienced in May and June this year,” he said.
Depot owners adjust prices
Checks showed that depot owners in Lagos have also adjusted their cooking gas prices.
Data from PretroleumPriceNG showed that depots have slightly hiked their rates as crude prices jumped on Monday, September 1, 2025.
Dangote Refinery still maintained the lowest rate at N725/kg, while Rainoil Lagos sells at N810, Ardova at N800, AA Rano at N820, and NAVGAS at N800.
The current cooking price comes as Nigerians are battling increased inflation, though the NBS report says it is cooling off at 21.88%.
