After much rejection of the federal government's Ruga settlement plan, President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday, July 3, suspended the initiative.

President Muhammadu Buhari suspended the Ruga settlement project on Wednesday, July 3, for a nationally acceptable approach to the frequent herdsmen-farmers clash in the country, This Day reports.

This came after much consultation between President Buhari and some key stakeholders under the platform of governors forum.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that the governor of Plateau state, Simon Lalong, in the evening of Monday, July 1, described as unnecessary the controversy that the proposed Ruga settlements had generated among Nigerians.

Lalong, who earlier met with President Muhammadu Buhari, said the Ruga was not different from ranching.

The governor, who spoke with State House correspondents after the meeting with Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, said as a member of the food security committee as well as that of the herdsmen/farmers committee, they have agreed that ranching is the main solution to the crisis in some states.

In Plateau, he said, there is nothing like Ruga, but full livestock business which is open to everyone. He recalled how the committee headed by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was frustrated when some people termed the move for ranching as ‘colonies’.
