Recently the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.- Gen. Kenneth Minimah has revealed that some army personnel have abandoned the force due to the fear of the terrorists group Boko Haram. Thus there are reasons to believe that Nigerian military is demoralised, lacking the motivation or firepower to tackle Boko Haram.

“Nigerian Army has done very well for Nigeria as a body but like every institution, there are bad eggs within the institution. They are in the minority and we must continue to do everything possible to show them up for who they are,” he said.

On July 12 the popular Madafuma bridge linking 185km Biu-Damboa-Maiduguri federal road has been destroyed by gunmen suspected to be members of Boko Haram.

It would be recalled that Nigeria’s President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency more than a year ago in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa states, saying he would give the military extra powers to fight Boko Haram. However, the insurgency has become more deadly since then, at least 2,053 civilians have been killed in an estimated 95 attacks during the first half of 2014, compared with 3,600 deaths in the first four years of the conflict.
