Young Man Beat Up Soldier With Stick, Threatens With Machete and Broken Bottles, Got N100 000 bail

A 24-year-old tailor, Lukman Suleiman, who beat a solider with a stick was given a N100,000 bail on  Friday by Surulere Chief Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

The accused, who resides at No. 15, Adeleye St., Sari-Iganmu, a Lagos suburb, is facing a four-count charge bordering on conspiracy, breach of peace and assault.

Suleiman pleaded not guilty. But the prosecutor, Insp. Gabriel Ekundayo, told the court that the accused with others still at large committed the offences on Oct. 31, 2013.

According to him, the accused beat up one Lance Cpl. Johnson Oluwunmi in a room at Ark Villa Hotel at Zion Street, Sari-Iganmu.

"Oluwunmi was in the hotel room when the accused dashed into the room and refused to leave.

An argument ensued which led to a fight and in the process, the manager of the hotel intervened and pleaded with the officer to release the accused.

The accused left and came back with 15 other men, all armed with machete, broken bottles and sticks to beat up Oluwunmi," Ekundayo alleged.

He noted that the offences contravened Sections 51, 166, 171 and 409 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2011.

The Magistrate, Mrs M.O. Olajuwon, granted the accused bail with two sureties in like sum and adjourned the case to Feb.18 for mention.
