Pandemonium in Biu as man kills girlfriend

A jealous lover has reportedly killed his girlfriend, a student at the College of Education Waka-Biu, Benue state.

Residents of Biu town were thrown into confusion as they mistook the killing for an attack by Boko Haram terrorists.

Members of the civilian-JTF and security operatives took to the streets while other civilians scampered home for safety as they thought the insurgents had invaded Biu and were attacking the people.

According to the state’s commissioner for Home Affairs, Information and Culture, Mr Inuwa Bawla, who happened to be in his country home, Marama, in Hawul local government which is about 20km away from Biu, the attack was not that of Boko Haram, but a feud between two young men fighting over a girl.

He said: “No it was not an attack by Boko Haram; but a rivalry between two young students over a girlfriend. One of them that happened to be more jealous, used a machete on the girl and she was said to have died. When people in the town heard about the incident they thought it was an insurgents’ attack, so they mobilised to see how they could tackle the attackers until it was made clear that it wasn’t so.”
