No fewer than 20 suspected Boko Haram members were reportedly killed in Buratai town, Borno state during a siege to the residence of Major General Tukur Buratai, the former Commander, Niger-Delta Special Task Force, who is an indigene of the town.

A resident of the town, Mallam Idi who spoke to Punch, said some gunmen numbering about 50 stormed the town at about 9.30am on Sunday, September 7, on motorcycles and Hilux Vans and attacked the residence of the army general.

According to Idi, the terrorists set all the telecommunications masts in the town on fire.

Unfortunately, they were repelled by soldiers guarding the army general’s residence and many of them were killed while others fled in different directions.

Idi said: "The soldiers, guarding the residence of the former task force commander, in collaboration with their colleagues from Biu Military Barrack and some members of the vigilance group, repelled the attackers, killing over 20 members of the sect."

Bukar Buba, another resident of the town who fled to Biu, corroborated Idi’s story, saying the soldiers guarding the general’s residence, successfully repelled the attackers.

They terrorists were said to have come into Buratai through Buni-Yadi, a Yobe town, which was seized by Boko Haram on August 20.

Buratai is a lonely town in Biu Local Government area of Borno State, which is a distance of over 200 kilometres from the state capital, Maiduguri.

No fewer than 650,000 are believed to have been displaced in northern Nigeria due to terror attacks carried out by Boko Haram insurgents.
