A group, Nigeria First, has commended President Muhammadu Buhari over his choice of Major General Farouk Yahaya as the new chief of army staff.
The group in a statement signed by its vice-president, Leonard Aluor, and seen by Legit.ng said the appointment of Yahaya as a successor to the late Lieutenant General Ibrahim Attahiru who died in an ill-fated air crash is applaudable.
Aluor said Yahaya's appointment is evidence of the president's commitment to the war against insurgency and insecurity across Nigeria.
Also describing the recent COAS' appointment as a step in the right direction, Aluor said the track record of the new service chief is that of dedication to the duty he was called to serve and passion for Nigeria.
He urged the new chief of army staff, to accept his appointment as a call to serve and an opportunity to ensure that the Nigerian army is placed on the hall of fame.
Further commending the reintroduction of various quarterly exercises in the nation's internal security operations by General Yahaya, Aluor said the new chief must continue to remain apolitical while ensuring that the Nigerian army works on a proactive intelligence network system against criminal minds.
"The new chief of army staff must put to bear his experiences garnered over the years in the discharge of his duties by ensuring that all criminal elements fomenting ethnic and religious tension in the country are dealt with decisively.
"This, in our considered opinion, remains a puerile attempt to plunge the country into an ethnic and religious crisis. The ethnic and religious champions amongst us must be guided to desist from heating the polity unnecessarily."
Meanwhile, Legit.ng previously reported that on Friday, May 28, the Nigerian army hosted a special parade in honour of General Yahaya as the new chief of army staff.

The parade which took place at the army headquarters in Abuja was conducted after Yahaya paid homage to his predecessor, late General Ibrahim Attahiru after he signed the condolence register at the Operation Hadin Kai theatre command, Maimalari Cantonment, Borno state.
In other news, the Zamfara state governor, Bello Matawalle, has condemned the growing cases of banditry in the northwest.
Matawalle said the incidents of banditry can be attributed to the lack of quick response from security personnel in the region.
He also urged the security operatives to work hard towards meeting the expectations of the people against the criminal in the state.
