LG Elections: Tinubu Speaks on Having a Preferred Candidate for Lagos State

A report claiming that the All Progressives Congress (APC) national leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, endorsed a candidate for the Lagos state local government election has been dismissed.

Channels TV reports that Tinubu who denied the claim said he did not ask anyone to step down as an aspirant on the platform of the APC for the position of local government chairman or councillorship.

According to him, such claims are targeted to hurt the ruling party, adding that the integrity of the primary process is of the highest priority for the APC.

The former governor in a statement on Sunday, May 23, faulted the allegations of a plot to influence the APC’s primaries for the July 22 council polls.

While stating that he has no preferred candidate for the forthcoming local government poll, Tinubu asked those interested in contesting to pursue their aspirations and follow APC’s guidelines, Vanguard reports.

Earlier, Legit.ng reported that ahead of the forthcoming local government council elections in Lagos state, APC released guidelines for aspirants contesting on its platform.

The party’s caretaker committee chair and secretary, Tunde Balogun, and Lanre Ogunyemi respectively made the announcement on Monday, May 3.

According to the duo, it was the party's duty to provide guidelines for its members seeking to contest the chairmanship, vice chairmanship, and councillorship positions.

In a related development, APC did not take part in the Sokoto state local government election.

The party announced its decision on Sunday, February 14, through Isa Sadiq Achida, the state chairman after due consultations with all stakeholders.

According to Achida, APC resolved to boycott the LG poll because members of the State Independent Electoral Commission are all card-carrying members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
