Real Sociedad captain Mikel Oyarzabal will be kicking himself after he missed a massive chance to mount a comeback for his side in the Europa League against Manchester United.

Trailing 4-0 from the first leg, the Spanish outfit were pretty much playing for pride but got a golden opportunity when Daniel James conceded a penalty in the opening stages.

Oyarzabal stepped up to take it but blazed his effort high and wide after attempting Bruno Fernandes’ signature jump-and-strike technique.

It was quite surprising to see the Spaniard miss the penalty by such a margin as he is typically very lethal from the spot.

His miss led to fans taking to social media to poke fun at his botched attempt to mimic Bruno Fernandes. One fan said:

“Oyarzabal tried to do a Fernandes but failed.”

Another added:

“Oyarzabal actually just mimicked Fernandes’ penalty routine to take the p*ss and then put his pen both high and wide. What a tool."

Said another:

“Mikel Oyarzabal attempts to imitate Fernandes' penalty and it ends in disaster."

The tie was rather mundane, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer resorted to game management throughout the 90 minutes because he had a four-goal cushion.

The Manchester United gaffer could afford to bring in Shola Shoretire, who became the youngest player to appear for Manchester United in a European competition.

The result means four British teams are through to the last 16 of the Europa League.

With no seedings or restrictions on sides from the same nation, English sides Arsenal, Tottenham, and Manchester United could clash with either one of the other in the last 16.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Nigerian star Shola Shoretire made history at Manchester United when he made his European debut for the Red Devils in their Europa League game.

The 17-year-old forward replaced Mason Greenwood in the 76th minute at Old Trafford against the Spanish giants in a match that ended goallessly.

Despite their failure to score a goal at home in the return leg against Real Sociedad, Ole Solskjaer and his wards have progressed to the round of 16 in the Europa League.
