Sad day as 1st manager outside of the UK to coach top English side dies mysteriously

- Jozef Venglos who was the first non-UK and Ireland coach to manage an English club died at age 84

- The former midfield star also took charge of Scottish side Celtic

Former Aston Villa and Celtic manager Jozef Venglos has been confirmed dead at the age of 84.

The late football star made history after becoming the first coach outside of England and Ireland to be appointed the handler of a topflight club in English football.

Though he lasted just one season in charge of the club after leaving them on the 17th position at the end of the 1990-91 season.

He moved to Turkey where he managed Fenerbahce for two seasons, while also managing Scottish outfit Celtic for one season before drawing the curtain on his coaching career in 2002.

Villa in a statement on their official website expressed sadness at the passage of their former manager, saying:

"Aston Villa is deeply saddened to learn of the passing of former manager Dr Jozef Venglos, who has died at the age of 84. The thoughts of everyone at the Club are with Jozef’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time.
"Dr. Jo made a piece of Villa history in the summer of 1990 when he became the club’s first overseas manager – and first born outside the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland to take charge of a top-flight English club."

Meanwhile, Celtic have also paid tribute to the late tactician, saying:

“Everyone at Celtic is extremely saddened to hear of the passing of our former manager, Dr Jozef Venglos, who has died at the age of 84. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at Celtic are with Dr Jozef Venglos’ family and the whole of football in Slovakia at this very sad time.”

His most successful spells came with the Czechoslovakia national team leading the country to a third-place finish of a major tournament.

Legit.ng earlier reported that Sheffield Wednesday legend and former England player Peter Swan had been confirmed dead at the age of 84.

The centre-half was pronounced dead on Thursday, January 21 at the Chesterfield Royal Hospital after battling with Alzheimer's disease since the mid-2000s.

Swan made over 300 appearances for the Owls having started his career with the Hillsborough Stadium outfit's youth team in 1952.
