- Messi is in the final six months of his current deal with Spanish giants Barcelona
Lionel Messi wants to finish career at Barcelona according if Xavi Hernandez would help convince his former teammate, presidential candidate Victor Font believes, Goal.
Fonta is hoping his proposal could prevent Joan Laporta for returning to office as the club's chief administrator on January 24, 2020.
The winner of the election will have to focus on La Blaugrana's captain Lionel Messi who is yet to commit to a new contract at Camp Nou.
The 33-year-old is in the final six months of his contract and club legend Xavi is believed to be the one to talk Messi out of leaving the club, according to Font.
“Messi has explained it, he ideally wants to stay here and finish his sports career at Barca.
“Before the summer, when there was the great frustration, he had always said that the most important condition for him is to have a winning and competitive project.
“We have a winning, competitive project, with people like Xavi. This relationship between Xavi and Messi exists, I believe that is one of the main reasons and guarantees that Messi will feel very comfortable with our project and we will have many options to continue.”
Font was asked whether Xavi has been discussing his plans with Messi, he added:
“I don't know what they're talking about, I know they're in contact because they have a relationship, but I don't know to what extent or the details of what they talk about.”
Meawnhile, Legit.ng had earlier reported that Lionel Messi's hopes of signing a new deal with Barcelona has just taken a tumble as reports reveal that the club is owing nearly £1billion, Daily Mail.
La Blaugrana were expected to have raked the same amount in a single season as income but the goalbal pandemic dealt a huge blow to the club's finances.
The incoming president will meet a €420m debt owed in the next one year when he resumes duties as Barca's top club administrator by the end of January.
