- The federal government has clarified its position regarding the ultimatum it issued to Nigerians on NIN registration
- The minister of communication and digital economy, Isa Pantami, has disclosed when the ultimatum was first issued
- Pantami is not pleased with the manner citizens are going about the registration
The federal government has justified the ultimatum it issued to Nigerians mandating them to link their SIM cards to the National Identity Numbers (NIN) or risk disconnection.
Isa Pantami, the minister of communication and digital economy stated that the government gave everyone about 12 months to complete the exercise.
“The deadline was announced since February 2020 – the first day that the policy was announced in Nigeria was on 4th Feberuary 2020.”
The minister said Nigerians are to be blamed for the rowdy situation at many registration points in the country.
He said the exercise was designed to ensure that it does not take each citizen more than 20 minutes to get registered.
“The problem is you know how our citizens are – we need attitudinal change. We announced that all the processes must be under COVID-19 guidelines but citizens will go there (when) their names are not part of those to be captured. You will ask them to go but they will not.”
Meanwhile, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has informed Nigerians that any National Identity Number (NIN) generated through the Bank Verification Number (BVN) must still undergo registration at NIMC enrollment centre.
The agency disclosed on Twitter on Monday, January 11, that NIN generated by BVN can only be valid after it has been updated at an enrollment centre.
Another tweet on Tuesday, January 12, NIMC urged Nigerians who generated NIN through BVN to complete their registration.
In other news, NIMC has warned the public to beware of a fake app that claims to help link the NIN to SIM cards.
Legit.ng reports that in a post on its Twitter handle, NIMC dissociated itself from the app, saying it is run by fraudsters who use it to harvest people’s NIN and BVN.
