- Youth empowerment remains the fundamental focus of the Delta state government in recent times
- Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has reiterated this again in his recent engagements in the state capital, Asaba
- A local administration council is also taking a cue from the Okowa administration in investing the wellbeing of Delta youths
Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta on Tuesday, December 29 said his administration took the empowerment of youths seriously because engagement of young people would engender peace in the state.
A statement from the Delta state government seen by Legit.ng noted that Okowa made the comment in Asaba during the inauguration of projects executed by Oshimili South local government council.
The projects include a skill acquisition centre, suggesting that the local council administration is taking a cue from the Delta state government's huge investment in youth empowerment over the years.
He stated that his administration was doing a lot in skill acquisition because he believes that no amount of projects will bring peace to the communities if the youths and women were not gainfully engaged.
“I am also glad that you are engaging our youths to ensure that more youths are able to use their brains to work and earn a living for themselves.
“The more youths we engage, the more skills they acquire and the more peace we are likely to have but more importantly, the more productive youths we will have in the state.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the chairman of the council, Osadebe, had said that the council under his watch, provided employment for the youths through its strategic revenue generation drive.
Recall that Governor Okowa recently stated that his administration’s determination to empower youths in the state with skills is targeted at building a stronger Delta.
He stated this on Monday, December 21 at the official handing-out of starter-packs to 2019/2020 Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Programme (STEP) and Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Programme (YAGEP) beneficiaries in the state capital, Asaba.
According to him, his administration remained committed to ensuring that more youths and women in the state were gainfully empowered in 2021.
Similarly, Governor Okowa recently stated that women empowerment needs to be tackled with concerted action to bridge the widening inequality gap in Nigeria and Africa.
According to him, both experts and policymakers agree that empowering women, especially the poor rural women, is fundamental to economic development in Nigeria.
