Liverpool have confirmed that their summer signing, Thiago Alcantara has tested positive for the deadly coronavirus.
Though not showing symptoms, the Spaniard has been asked to self-isolate in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.
The 29-year-old who helped Bayern Munich win the Champions League title last season joined the Reds on a four-year deal this transfer window.
He made his debut when he came on for Jordan Henderson in their 2-0 victory over Chelsea earlier in the season.
The former Barcelona midfielder was missing in his side's triumphs over Lincoln City and Arsenal in the EFL Cup and Premier League respectively. The club said on their website that:
"Thiago has exhibited minor symptoms of the virus but is in good health and is getting better.
"The club has, and will continue to follow, all protocols relating to COVID-19 and Thiago will remain in self-isolation for the required period of time."
Earlier this week, the Premier League organisers confirmed 10 new COVID-19 cases after another round of testing was conducted.
This is the highest number of positive results since the season began a few weeks back.
Liverpool and Arsenal reignite their rivalry on Thursday when they clash in the fourth round of the EFL Cup. Liverpool first-team doctor, Dr Jim Moxon said:
"It is the choice of each individual whether they reveal publicly the outcome of a Covid-19 test."
"We have followed all the protocols to the letter and Thiago is OK. He will be self-isolating now as per the guidelines and hopefully he'll be back with us soon."
Legit.ng earlier reported that the English Premier League table makes for interesting viewing after the latest round of fixtures, with Leicester City sitting comfortably at the top.
The Foxes are sitting atop of the log with nine points after their impressive triumph over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium over the weekend.
They are on the same points with defending champions, Liverpool and Everton - the remaining two teams who are yet to drop points so far this new campaign.
