Federal Ministry of Health has disclosed that processes are ongoing to harness herbal medicine for clinical management of coronavirus (Covid-19) patients.
Speaking with Radio Nigeria on Saturday morning, May 9, Adebimpe Adebiyi, director of hospital services, made the disclosure amid mounting pressure on the federal government to consider a local alternative cure for the virus.
Adebiyi noted that prior to the outbreak of novel coronavirus, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has been lending hands of support to states in the country.
She also maintained the disease control agency can only give guidelines on preventive measures against coronavirus as there is no vaccine for the fast-spreading virus.
"Prior to the Covid-19 outbreak, NCDC has been supporting states in preparedness and response to disease outbreaks.
"The Centre provides guidelines and technical support to states in response to COVID-19 in Nigeria,” she said.
On herbal alternative for the treatment of coronavirus patients, Adebiyi added the federal government has begun the process on how herbal medicine can be used for clinical management.
In respect to how Madagascar claimed it is using a local herbal remedy to treat coronavirus, the hospital services director maintained that such treatment may not effectively work out in Nigeria.
“There’s no available cure for #COVID19 yet, what is obtainable in another country may not apply in Nigeria.
"Processes are ongoing to harness herbal medicine for clinical management of COVID19 patients,” she further emphasised.
It would be recalled that the federal government earlier said it was not ruling out the possibility of using local herbs to tackle the novel coronavirus as countries across the world divert towards local alternative.
Speaking during the presidential task force briefing on Covid-19 on Tuesday, May 5, Osagie Ehanire, minister of health, gave the flashes of hope.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the federal government has directed the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to carry out an assessment on the possibility of using herbal mixture to cure coronavirus.
Ministry of Health, through a memo with REF no. TCAM/077/I/65 directed to the director-general of NAFDAC, Mojisola Adeyeye, by its permanent secretary, Mashi Abdullahi, gave the directive.
