Coronavirus: FG releases fresh N620m to fight against disease

- The sum of N620 million which is the second tranche of the funds needed to tackle the coronavirus (Covid-19) disease has been released

- This brings the total funds released to tackle COVID-19 in Nigeria to N984 million

- Every government around the world is working hard to control the spread of the virus which has killed over 3000 people

To battle the dreaded coronavirus, the federal government has released N620 million. This is the second tranche of funds, provided to address the spread of the disease.

This was disclosed in a statement released on Friday, March 6, by Yunusa Tanko Abdullahi, special adviser on media and communication to Zainab Ahmed, minister of finance, The Cable reports.

According to Abdullahi, the release and approval of the funds by President Muhammadu Buhari was an emergency and an unexpected expenditure.

Daily Trust reports that the first tranche of N364 million had been released earlier by the ministry. The process of releasing the second tranche has now been concluded, bringing total release to N984 million.

“However, the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning had released the first tranche of N364 million some time ago and the process of releasing the second tranche has been concluded with the release of N620 million this morning, bringing total release to N984 million," the statement read.

All around the world, all hands are on deck to tackle the spread of coronavirus which has been confirmed in at least 97 countries. It first started in Wuhan, China, some time in December 2019 and has since spread globally.

Nigeria recorded its first case on February 27. The index case is a 44-year-old Italian national who came into the country for business.

Following the announcement, Nigerians have reacted to reports of the outbreak in the country and how the disease has affected lifestyle and businesses.

In a poll conducted by Legit.ng, it was discovered that the emergence of the dreaded virus in the country has not had any bearing on the core of daily living.

Most Nigerians on social media, especially on Facebook have said that they go about their usual activities amidst fears of the disease.

While 15% of citizens said that the epidemic has had its toll on business in one way or the other, the rest 85% said the opposite.

Same is the case on Twitter as most persons on the micro-blogging site seem not to express any panic over the situation.
