A clarion call has been made for the support of Amotekun, a joint security outfit set up by state governors of the southwest region.

The call was made to indigenes of the geopolitical region by Oba Enitan Adeyeye, the Ooni of Ife, Nigerian Tribune reports.

The Ooni said that the outfit will not in any way take over the duties of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) but will only work to support it towards eradicating violence and criminality in the southwest.

The monarch also said that the governors met with the federal government for support before the establishment of the outfit.

He said: "Before the creation of Amotekun, we had a meeting with the federal government to seek their support.

"So, have this in mind that the Amotekun does not take over the duties of the state police, but they are only here to support them."

Meanwhile, Legit.ng reported that the position of the federal government that Amotekun established by southwest states was illegal has triggered a lot of heated reactions from the region.

Apart from the fact that some sections of the country have said that only a court of law can invalidate the group, southern and middle belt leaders forum has said that the declaration of the federal government proves that some states in the country are deliberately left vulnerable to attacks by criminals.

The forum called on governors in the region to ignore the stance of Attorney General of the Federation Abubakar Malami, adding that he should take the case to court instead of constituting himself as one.

It further said that the right of any citizen or group in the country to protect themselves from harm and violence is necessarily not under any exclusive list.

The group said: “We insist that what the Governors have done is what individuals and neighbourhoods can legally do to secure their lives and property.
