'Nigerians Should Overthrow Political Elite'

Nigerians need to subvert the political class before they can begin to enjoy any form of meaningful development, Dr. Oladipo Fashina, a Professor of Philosophy said yesterday at the University of Abuja.

Fashina who made the statement at the Biennial Conference of the Nigerian Philosophical Association said in Europe the bourgeoisies dedicated themselves to making profit aimed at developing science, culture and political institutions but the Nigerian political class are only interested in self accumulation.

He said, “They have not developed industries, science or any political innovation. The task of philosophers is to get away from this illusion that they would save Nigeria because they would not. If Nigerians want to develop a self-confident future, it is to overthrow these bourgeoisies. They are imitators, they have no originality.”

Fashina said what Nigerians need is for the intellectuals to overthrow the political class and re-organise the society which he warned might be difficult because of the international support they enjoy.

Acting Head of Department of Philosophy and Religions University of Abuja, Samuel Alifa said deliberations at the conference should bring peace and positive progress in Nigeria and knowledge advancement.

The Association honoured Prof. Timothy Nwala with the Aime Ceasire Award for African Philosophy, for instituting the first course ever in African Philosophy to be taught in a university in the world.
