PDP accuses tribunal of frustrating right to appeal judgement

- The PDP accused the tribunal in Edo state of frustrating its effort at appealing its judgement

- The party claimed the judiciary was being influenced by the APC

-However, the ruling party denied the accusation insisting it has nothing to do with the development

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has accused the Edo state national and state assembly election petitions tribunal of frustrating its right to appeal.

Honourable Omosede Igbinedion had filed a petition against the election of Honourable Dennis Idahosa but the three-man panel had dismissed the petition for lack of merit.

The PDP in a statement signed by its publicity secretary, Chris Nehikhare, said the certified true copy of the enrollment order of judgement has not been released.

The party said: “It is a known fact that parties are allowed by law to go on appeal within 21 days of judgement.

“But our right of appeal is being frustrated by the deliberate delay to avail us with copies of the judgement to enable us file our appeal within time. We are informed that APC leaders have boasted that by the time we get certified copies of the judgement, our lawyers will not have time to file any appeal. They have admitted in certain quarters that they may lose at appeal even though they know that the tribunal tried in its 5 hour long judgment to justify its position.

“Edo PDP calls on the tribunal to immediately do the needful as it is common knowledge that copies of judgement passed several days after the Omosede Igbinedion petition have been made available to the parties involved.

“The tribunal will be doing itself a great disservice if they allow APC to create the impression that in this particular case, they are taking instructions from 'outside'.”

Ansell Ojezua who is the chairman of the APC in the state denied allegation that the party was influencing the judiciary. He said: “When did the APC become a member of the judiciary? We are also affected by the delay.”

Meanwhile, ahead of the governorship election holding in Kogi and Bayelsa states on Saturday, November 16, the PDP said that it would defeat the APC and other parties that contest the elections.

The party's national publicity secretary, Kola Ologbondiyan, said in a statement issued on Tuesday, September 17, that the PDP has begun reconciling its aggrieved members following the aftermath of its governorship primaries in Kogi and Bayelsa states.
