Akwa Ibom reps member breaks record, appoints 50 personal aides

- A House of Reps member from Akwa Ibom, Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo, has appointed 50 personal aides

Emmanuel Ukpong-Udo who is a federal lawmaker from Akwa Ibom state has appointed 50 personal aides

The lawmaker representing Ikono/Ini federal constituency in the House of Representatives, is occupying the position for the first time.

Premium Times reports that “employing 50 people in a single move by a lawmaker is seen as record-breaking in the state.”

It was reported that the position of the aides ranges from “special assistant on special duties, community relations, community development, and logistics duties, to special assistant on women matters, protocol, and local legislative matters.”

Ukpong-Udo also appointed four media aides.

The lawmaker will be paying 45 of the aides himself as House of Representative members are only permitted five aides.

One of the aides, Imowo Mbede, said the appointment was the lawmaker’s way of empowering his constituents. He said: “It’s basically an empowerment thing. A good number of them are from all the wards in the two local government areas (Ikono and Ini), while others are from outside the federal constituency.”

He said the appointment is to run for a year, after which a new set of persons would be appointed as a replacement.

Meanwhile, the minority caucus in the House of Representative called on the PDP to rescind its decision on the suspension of minority principal officers of the House.

At a news conference on Monday, July 8, in Abuja, the caucus passed a vote of confidence on the suspended officers as well as speaker, Femi Gbajabiamila.

The National Working Committee (NWC) of the PDP had on Thursday, July 4, suspended Ndudi Elumelu who is the minority leader of the House.

The party also suspended Toby Okechukwu, the deputy minority leader; Gideon Gwani, the minority whip, Adesegu Adekoya who is the deputy minority whip and two ranking members, Wole Oke and Lynda Ikpeazu.
