Just in: Court rejects Melaye’s request to order police officers out of his Abuja residence

- Senator Melaye's request to restrain the police from further arresting him has been declined by the court

- However, the court ruled that the matter be granted accelerated hearing

- Melaye is wanted by the police, who have been laying a siege to his Abuja residence for days

A request by Kogi state senator, Dino Melaye, for police officers to vacate his residence and desist from further attempts at arresting him has been declined by a Federal High Court in Abuja, Premium Times reports.

Legit.ng gathered that Melaye had approached the court through his lawyer, Nkem Okoro of the Mike Ozekhome (SAN) chambers after the police officers laid a siege to his residence following allegations by the senator that the police planned to poison him.

Melaye had also asked the court to stop the police from what he described as acting in a manner threatening his life or putting his life in jeopardy pending the determination of the substantive suit.

He further sought the order of the court restraining the police from further arresting him, pending the hearing and determination of the substantive suit.

The court had subsequently fixed Thursday, January 3, for the hearing of the ex-parte application filed together with the enforcement of his fundamental human rights’ suit.

Judge, N. E. Maha, in a ruling on the ex-parte application on Thursday, refused the application, but ruled that the matter be granted accelerated hearing. The matter was thereafter adjourned to January 14.

The Kogi state senator is already facing two separate charges of attempted suicide and allegedly arming criminal suspects.

The police has insisted on arresting the Kogi state senator accusing him of involvement in the killing of an officer.

In an earlier report, about 50 additional police officers were said to have been deployed Melaye’s Abuja residence, According to the report, the police might enter the building forcefully to arrest the lawmaker who is said to be inside the house. It was gathered that many policemen were seen taking positions near the mansion.

Legit.ng previously reported that Senator Dino Melaye raised the alarm over an alleged police attempt to break into his Abuja house to forcefully arrest him.

The senator representing Kogi West made the accusation on Wednesday, January 2, in a tweet on his Twitter handle.

He alleged that the police were bringing in tools which would be used to forcefully gain entrance into his home and arrest him after days of laying siege to his property in Maitama area of Abuja, the nation's capital city.
