Breaking: Court nullifies Imo APC congresses, orders fresh polls

The last elections into wards, local government areas and state congresses of the Imo state chapter of the All Progressives Congress has been nullified by a Federal High Court in Owerri on Thursday, July 5.

Consequently, the court also ordered the party to hold fresh congresses.

Justice Lewis Allagoa, the presiding judge also ordered APC “to be responsible, save our democracy by conducting free and fair congresses in Imo state”.

Punch reports that the judge also dismissed a motion filed by the defendants, insisted that his court had jurisdiction to hear the matter.

Going further, he was reported to have said the exhibits tendered by the plaintiffs suggesting that there was no ward congress in the state on May 5, “was factual.”

“Press interview between the state commissioner of police, the state governor, Rochas Okorocha and Senator Osita Izunaso that there was no APC ward congress in Imo State on May 5 as justiciable in law,” the judge was quoted have said.

The Judge also cited urged the APC to be responsible and save Nigeria's democracy.

“APC should go and be responsible and save our democracy. The defendants and the plaintiffs are members of the same political party, APC. There is no victor, no vanquished.”

Recall that a faction of the party loyal to the state governor, had approached the court seeking a “declaration that the ward congress of the APC in Imo state which was fixed for May 5 was inconclusive and did not hold, since there was no result therefrom”.

Meanwhile, Legit.ng had reported that the appeals committee that looked into the ward congresses of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo state had refuted the claims made by the state governor, Rochas Okorocha and members of the state House of Assembly, that ward congresses did not take place in the state.
