Another woman working at a checkout counter was also attacked. Both victims were taken to hospital. Marchal said: "It appears to be an isolated case by a person with known psychological problems.Though that doesn't exclude the possibility that she may have been radicalised."

The female attacker, dressed in black and wearing dark sunglasses, did not have a police record. She was overpowered by a customer and two supermarket employees and was taken into police custody.

One of those who stopped the attacker, Sebastien said: "I grabbed her wrists to get hold of the cutter. I asked her 'Why did you do it.' She did not answer."

"She was in a panic, she was afraid, she did not understand what was happening to her, she had no strength left."

Police officials carried out a search in her home to determine if she is in any way linked to the Islamic state group. Marchal said: "We don't yet know if this is a terrorist act, but in any case it was terrifying."
